Realtionships in my culture:
1. Who do the members in my culture consider to be my family? I would have to say the blood related people, people related through marriage of a blood related member, pets.
2. What are some roles and resposibilties of specific family members? Mainly that everyone needs to have respect to everyone and responsibilities. You need to respect and help out your parents at all times.
3. Are family members encouraged to stay in the same house/ area as their family after adolscence? The children are expected to go to school and live at home until they graduate from high school and then it is up to them whether they go to college or not and move out. Eventually they are expected to move out once they wed.
4. What are the cultural norms and taboos regarding dating and meeting people with whom to become romantically involved? Well it is necessary that the family meets the significant other before they get married and that they should meet more then once with the family.
5. How are marriage proposals conducted? The man picks a special smeaningful spot and gets on one knee with an engagement ring and asks the woman if she will marry him. Usually the guy should ask the parents for permission ahead of time.
6. What is the typical wedding like? They get married in a church and then have a ceremony there and then afterwards they have a receptions with food and dancing fun at some kind of hotel.
This is pretty specific to my family which I do not think I was suppose to do...
What is the craziest tradition that you personally family has with marriage and weddings??

Activity 9
I watched the show "That 70's Show."
1. To that show to be an american means to live the "all american way," house wife, husband that works and brings home the bacon or faught in war, children who do as they are told and follow rules.
2. Well in this show the expectstions are above, yet these families really end up breaking them alot. The families are from WI and fight and have realtionships, etc.
3. What do they look like..? Well they are all mainly white except for Fez. They all dress like they did back in the 70's and wear their hairstyles like that as well.
4. Who do they hang with? Well the teenagers all hang together and get high together and the parents of most of those teenagers are friends as well.
5. They all live in WI!!
6. This show says to someone that has no experience with the US.. well not the best image at all. Actually it does not really send a good message at all. It is very stereotypical and is based in the 70's so if someone watched it now in the 2000's they would have a very blurred, not accurate mind set of people in the US.
This show is pretty funny, but does not set the best image for Americans.
If you have seen this show what do you think it says about the US??

Activity 8
Some of the biggest transitions in my life would probably be, First off when I moved from Eagan, MN to Hudson, WI after second grade. This was a tramatic time for me because of the fact that I was so young and shy at this age. When I moved to the new school in WI people were not the most welcoming people and I had two girls fighting over who got to play with me at what recess and my teacher who would point me out to the class in the areas that I was bad at.
Second, I would have to say moving into the dorms my freshmen year of college because it is all new surroundings and people and situation. After awhile though I made friends quickly because I was not as shy anymore and everyone was in the same boat.
Lastly, the one that has affected me the most would have to be my mom going through all of her surgeries in her life, her being my heroine and all. She had breast cancer when I was 12 and a knee replacement when I was 18 and then just last week she had a huge reconstructive foot surgery. I would say that seeing her over come all of these obstacles in her life and being still so positive and strong through the whole thing and always putting my sister and me first would be the largest impact in my life. Many times I may get down about my life and think to myself, "wow I am soo stressed. and fat, and I need to get my grades up, and oh man I worked so hard today I am sore," then I look at people like my mom who has had it way worse and then I realize how truely thankful I am for my life and the great people that I have in my life.
I feel like every experience in my life has affected me in someway from the little things to the big things and that everyone learns and grows from those experiences.
How do you handle the hardships in life, like what do you do to stay positive? Any ideas? I need some right now..

Activity 7
I felt that this whole activity was super humourous and I actually had to try to not laugh. The first part with the eye contact I used on one of my roommates and I was just constant staring at her and watching every word that was coming out of her mouth. I could tell that she was feeling super uncomfortable because she would try and look away as much as she could and was looking down alot. It was obvious that she felt uncomfortable which I know I would feel the exact same way in that situation.
Then in my other situation I used another roommate. They are great victims!! I did not even look at her once when she was talking. She actually asked me if everything was okay and if I had alot on my mind. I was just like, " everything is fine go ahead." Then she stopped again and said, "are you even listening?!" It was really funny and I could tell that she was getting annoyed with me by doing this and never looking at her once. Then once I debriefed her she laughed so hard and said, " oh good because I was getting mad at you."
The back me up conversation was the best one yet. I used my roommate who is a guy and dating one of my ex roommates and we are not very close at all. When he started talking to me and I slowly started to move closer to him you could tell that he would start to try and not have as much eye contact with me and when I was super close to him about a little over two feet away I could see him slightly backing up. It was so hillarious!! Afterwards I debriefed him and he was like, " yeah honestly I was feeling soo awkward I did not know what to do."
What is the worst stare down moment that you have had with someone where they do not break eye contact for the life of them?

Activity 6
This activity on these web sites I found to be a lot of fun! It is funny to hear the way that people around even just the US area speak and sound. I was able to get the southern accents down easily and one of the northern accents, but all of the other ones I did a bad job at. I thought it was interesting if you clicked on the himts to see what they had to say. How some of the people would hold out a vowel sound or something which would really emphasize how they spoke in that certain area. I always wanted to have an accent, but I guess to other people in the world I do have an accent. When I went to Florida some years back we were talking to a family on a bus and they said that we pronounce the word ocean funny because we really hold out the o sound. I thought that that was interesting.
During the second ste I felt that it was pretty easy for me to understand the word black and desk, but that I had no clue they were saying busses and socks. This one was very difficult for me and I did not understand how the hints helped at all. They would just say a little bit more of the word around it.
Do you think that your "accent" compliments or goes with where you are from?

Identity
Avowed Identity- young, caring, sensitive, strong willed, hardworking, loving, insecure
Ascribed Identity- sister, loving, hard worker, caring, funny, beautifel, pale, friendly hyper
The people that I got my ascribed identities from would be my family and my closest friends. The people in my life who know the most about me. I feel that right away when you are born you are given ascribed identities. Throughout the years your ascribed identities may mainly change and that some of them may stick with you until the day you die. The way that I have been raised I feel has given me my positive Avowed and Ascribed identities that I carry. I am very thankful that I was raised by two wonderful parents and that I have turned out to be the way that I am.
Some of the identites that have changed a couple times would have to be my outgoing/ shy level. When I was young around the age of 2- 5 yrs old I was a very talkative young girl that would never shut up and would always speak for my little sister. then as I went to elementary school I started to be more nervous and got quieter. I moved around a bit in elementary school and was forced to meet new friends which caused me to be way more shy. Throughout middle school was the age group when I felt insecure about myself until like my junior year in high school when I got my first boyfriend I became way more outgoing. Ever since then I have been breaking more and more out of my shell and all my friends think that I am a super outgoing person. So a persons identity can for sure change drastically through out the years. I feel that the ascribed identities that I have got in my life have all been pretty positive which is awesome and for sure brings up my self esteem.
Well being a red head and pale my who life I have got alot of crap from it through out my life. When I was younger it never really bothered me until about the age of middle school high school age. My friends and other people always gave me a hard time for having such pale skin and I would get called names for awhile for being a red head, yet those are identities that I cannot really control. I guess a main identity that I wish I could resist would be the fact that I am a hard core people pleaser and push over. My whole life this has been an awful identity that I strongly dislike and have improved on this slowly throughout the years.
Do you feel that the avowed identities and ascribed identities usually match up for the most part?

Quiz Response
This quiz activity I thought was going to be okay as I started out, but it ended up becoming more difficult as I got earlier in the years. I have never really been a history buff and to be honest throughout my years I have tried to avoid anything hostory at all. So during this quiz I really found myself thinking back to my history classes in high school.
The ethnic group that I found to be the easiest for me would have to be the white and black people, I feel like while growing up all teachers really focused on the white and african americans throughout our history. I felt like I did the best on the male, white people, because there are so many presidents that you can think of through out the years. There are also inventors that where mainly males as well. The white females were somewhat easy to me as well because being a female myself I find myself trying to know the woman who have changed lives in the US.
I feel like history, well books and all seem to focus the most on white and african american people. I remember in history class that slavery was always a huge topic to talk about in classes. When talking about US history I do not feel like latinos or asian people are talked about at all really. I do not really remember going over any of these two ethnic groups while in history class.
I have realized while taking this quiz that I wish I would have paid more attention in my history classes. I believe that it is very important for anyone in the US to know about their own countries history. I feel awful that I never took the time to really try to understand the people in our histories past and so forth.
I honestly think that some groups are not talked about as much as I believe whites and blacks are talked about because they do not seem to play as an enormous role in the US history. They take important roles around the world and now days they are coming more into play. I feel like more recent years all ethnic backgrounds in the US are talked about the same.
Why do you think that in history classes teachers seem to not cover all of the main ethnic backgrounds? Do you feel that you are well educated on famous people in US history? (unlike me)

Ethnic Background
I have brought up a couple times to my parents where our family is from and what my ethnic background is. They told me that I am mainly Austrian, German, and Sweedish. So pretty much a mut. My ethnic background I do not feel like it influences who I am at all considering that I found out my ethnic background at the age of like fifteen. I can see where some people's ethnic background could influence who they are if they grew up knowing and living with strong ethnic beliefs.
I feel that the way you are raised and brought up by my parents has a way stronger impact on my life. Keeping things fair and equal was always their number one thing. If they allowed me to do something at a certain age then when my younger sister reached that age they allowed her to do the same. They also wanted us to always stay positive, even through tough times. Religon was another thing, my parents would take us to church every Sunday and we did Sunday school and got confirmed, etc. I feel that the way my parents raised me had a way stronger impact then my ethnic background.
I have red hair and many people think that I am Irish hard core, but in reality I am hardly even one percent Irish. So I think that it is sometimes very hard for a person to tell what another person's ethnic background really is. Honestly, my close friends I do not even know what their ethnic background was and I could probably try to guess it, but get it completely wrong. When people communicate I do not think that the first thing on their mind is, "what is this person's ethnic background?" i never think of that when I am talking to someone so for me it would never interupt or influence my communication with another person.
When is a situation when you would put someone's ethnic background to thought?

Public Setting
The other day I was able to sit at Caribou Coffee in Hudson, WI. It was a nice place, that I have only been to a couple times, yet never stayed there to drink my coffee I always got it to go. I went at ten in the morning so that it would be somewhat busy. It was a nice and peaceful enviornment and I ordered a caramel cooler and sat at a table right next to the fireplace. Luckily the fireplace was not on because it was so humid and yucky outside.
You could tell that everyone that was sitting at the tables were strategically spred out. No one was sitting at a table very close to the other person. Every one was enjoying their coffee and in conversation. There were a couple people sitting at a table by themself like me, but most of the people were with someone. There were many people that had the daily newspaper out, and others that had their laptop on them. Most people that came in were in a very good mood for being in the morning, which is awesome because I for sure am not a morning person. There is a tip jar next to the register and no one tipped at all, except two people that threw their change into the cup. People stood in line waiting to order their coffee and some of them were talking to the people around them. The whole enviornment over all is pretty quiet. There were no children at the Caribou at all, which is good because I think it is craziness when parents give their child coffee.
I feel that if someone was to do a "forbiddin behavior" it would be that they would come in and make a ton of noise and just be obnoxious and annoying. The enviornment itself is peaceful and nice. Also, if someone sat really close to another person getting into their personal bubble would be another main issue. Many of the people that comeinto Caribou in the morning time I have found are regulars or people that come in pretty often. I would think that if people come in and do not really know the menu, such as myself, then it is kind of like a "forbiddin behavior." To be someone that is a virgin to the Caibou Coffee I do not feel like they would have a super hard time to "fit in" or communicate because there is a menu and you can look around when you first walk in and know that it is a quiet envirnment.
It was a good and tasty experience to go into Caribou Coffee and observe the surroundings. The enviornment would be a great place to go and work on homework, also I found out that it has wireless internet! Communication at this area would not be difficult at all.
Where is a place that you think would be dificult to communicate and understand what is going on?
