Quiz Response

This quiz activity I thought was going to be okay as I started out, but it ended up becoming more difficult as I got earlier in the years. I have never really been a history buff and to be honest throughout my years I have tried to avoid anything hostory at all. So during this quiz I really found myself thinking back to my history classes in high school.

The ethnic group that I found to be the easiest for me would have to be the white and black people, I feel like while growing up all teachers really focused on the white and african americans throughout our history. I felt like I did the best on the male, white people, because there are so many presidents that you can think of through out the years. There are also inventors that where mainly males as well. The white females were somewhat easy to me as well because being a female myself I find myself trying to know the woman who have changed lives in the US.

I feel like history, well books and all seem to focus the most on white and african american people. I remember in history class that slavery was always a huge topic to talk about in classes. When talking about US history I do not feel like latinos or asian people are talked about at all really. I do not really remember going over any of these two ethnic groups while in history class.

I have realized while taking this quiz that I wish I would have paid more attention in my history classes. I believe that it is very important for anyone in the US to know about their own countries history. I feel awful that I never took the time to really try to understand the people in our histories past and so forth.

I honestly think that some groups are not talked about as much as I believe whites and blacks are talked about because they do not seem to play as an enormous role in the US history. They take important roles around the world and now days they are coming more into play. I feel like more recent years all ethnic backgrounds in the US are talked about the same.

Why do you think that in history classes teachers seem to not cover all of the main ethnic backgrounds? Do you feel that you are well educated on famous people in US history? (unlike me)

  1. I think that history classes don’t focus on all ethnicities because the there isn’t a lot of information about the other ethnicities in the average textbooks. I think this is due to the fact the white males have been the predominate gender and ethnicity so it has been their history and prospective that has been recorded. I feel like I am in the same boat as you about not being very well educated on the U.S. history.

  2. I think that many teachers focus their content on what the school curriculum expects of him. Also, however, I think many history teachers want to teach the histories that they know best. And that seems to be American/European history. But I feel that I am too not very confident when it comes to histories other than US history. However, I feel that colleges are as much to blame for this than secondary schools. For instance, when I was going to school at the University of Minnesota, I only needed one history course to graduate whereas I needed 2 years of a foreign language. Which is more important? It is just a matter of opinion.

  3. I agree that we're taught what is in the curriculum and what the teachers know. Also in our area we aren't very close to other countries where many of them would be immigrating here so there is almost a lack of obligation to talk about different ethnicities. I know some about US history but it definitely isn't my strong point. I feel like I didn't have the greatest history teachers in high school They covered the material but they didn't make it interesting. I feel like history is not emphasized enough in schools.

  4. I don't think teachers specifically get to choose what they teach, mostly their cirriculum seems to be handed to them and they are told what to teach about! I think that they may attempt to cover all that they can, or seem to focus on things they personally know the most about! I agree with you in the fact that I do not feel well educated in learning the history of different ethnicities in my school, so hopefully some school actually learned more than we did when it comes to ethnicities or we'll all be uneducated!
