I watched the show "That 70's Show."
1. To that show to be an american means to live the "all american way," house wife, husband that works and brings home the bacon or faught in war, children who do as they are told and follow rules.
2. Well in this show the expectstions are above, yet these families really end up breaking them alot. The families are from WI and fight and have realtionships, etc.
3. What do they look like..? Well they are all mainly white except for Fez. They all dress like they did back in the 70's and wear their hairstyles like that as well.
4. Who do they hang with? Well the teenagers all hang together and get high together and the parents of most of those teenagers are friends as well.
5. They all live in WI!!
6. This show says to someone that has no experience with the US.. well not the best image at all. Actually it does not really send a good message at all. It is very stereotypical and is based in the 70's so if someone watched it now in the 2000's they would have a very blurred, not accurate mind set of people in the US.
This show is pretty funny, but does not set the best image for Americans.
If you have seen this show what do you think it says about the US??

I also did this activity on that 70s show, its one of my favorite shows. I think it says somethings about the US but at the same time the show is based out of the 70s and not today so if people are smart enough to realize that times have changed, they wouldn't take the show too literally.
ReplyDeleteI have never seen that 70's show so it's hard for me to answer this question. I many people probably have seen this show so it may look bad I've never really seen it, but I wouldn't have any idea how it makes the U.S. look and what it says about us clearly because I've never seen it!
ReplyDeleteLike Charissa said this show is from the 70's and I would hope most people wouldn't take it seriously, but if they did then they're going to think we're a bunch of pot smoking hippies. It would also give the idea that we're really arrogant but yet still stupid. I love this show. I think it's hilarious, but it's not how Americans are.
ReplyDeleteI think Charissa brings up a good point about the show being set in the 70's and that hopefully people would be able to figure out that the show not only stereotypes some ethnicity but it also has some major stereotypes of the time as well. Either way I think that this show would give the wrong impression of America so someone who had no exposure to it.
ReplyDeleteI believe this show parodied the social knowledge of teenagers in the 70s. Hyde and his black sister, the awesome relationship between Donna and Erik and the freedoms they had with their identities. What message do you think the show was trying to get across with FES (Foreign Exchange Student)?
