Activity 6

This activity on these web sites I found to be a lot of fun! It is funny to hear the way that people around even just the US area speak and sound. I was able to get the southern accents down easily and one of the northern accents, but all of the other ones I did a bad job at. I thought it was interesting if you clicked on the himts to see what they had to say. How some of the people would hold out a vowel sound or something which would really emphasize how they spoke in that certain area. I always wanted to have an accent, but I guess to other people in the world I do have an accent. When I went to Florida some years back we were talking to a family on a bus and they said that we pronounce the word ocean funny because we really hold out the o sound. I thought that that was interesting.
During the second ste I felt that it was pretty easy for me to understand the word black and desk, but that I had no clue they were saying busses and socks. This one was very difficult for me and I did not understand how the hints helped at all. They would just say a little bit more of the word around it.
Do you think that your "accent" compliments or goes with where you are from?

  1. I get made fun of for my accent a lot because of the fact that certain words that I say do not sound like a minnesotan accent. It does not bother me when people make fun of me for this. I like the way I say things, it may sound weird to others but to me it feels right.

  2. I think everyone has an accent, and people can tell where you're from by listening to you speak, therefore I do believe that it does compliment where we are from. People automatically assume I'm from MN because I talk fast and hold specific letters longer, and I obviously am from here, so it makes sense and compliments the way I talk to where I'm from.

  3. I don't know that I've ever been told I have an accent, but I have been made fun of for certain words I used. I've lived in Wisconsin my whole life and I say "pop" and "water fountain" and whatever other words we use. Just because I've never been told doesn't mean I don't have an accent though. I've been to other states and they obviously knew I was from the midwest so it's very likely that the way I speak is very midwestern.

  4. I have only been told that I have an accent by my friend that moved to Wisconsin from Texas. I find it interesting that even after living in Wisconsin from 6 years he can still pick up on the Midwest accent and he still maintains a bit of a Southern accent.
